Delany Academy was established in 2008.

Mission:  To provide a quality education to the children of the very poor.

At present there are 72 children in Classes KG and One and four teachers. Computer Education and French are also taught from Class One. The neighbouring French-speaking country of Ivory Coast is just a few kilometers away from Dormaa.

                New school building under construction:

The construction work besides being very slow had to be stopped on a few occasions and sections demolished and rebuilt to meet the quality levels that were expected of. The shell is complete, the roof has been added and it is hoped that by the end of May the false ceiling, plastering, terrazzo work and painting will be completed and the building handed over to be furnished and got ready for the inauguration on the 9th September 2009.

Construction costs in Ghana are very high. A number of areas of the original contract were subsequently taken off and the Brothers have sub-contracted these jobs at a lower rate and supervise these jobs themselves. The present building designed to accommodate one section in each class of the Primary School has eleven classrooms, a Principal’s office and a store room. One of the classrooms will be used as a staffroom, another as a computer room and the third as a library cum audio visual room. A separate toilet block is also under construction.

Work on the approach road and drainage system is also underway. A bore hole had been sunk eight months ago with financial assistance from The Little Way Association in London. Initially there was great hope of a regular and plentiful supply of water but that was not to be necessitating the construction of an open well. Water has been struck at a depth of   seventy feet and with these two sources it looks like that basic need will be met. Bro. Thomas is the building project coordinator.

We have plans to start a tailoring school for girls and job opportunities for boys by cultivating part of the land. Many of the young boys and girls drop out of school and as a result there are a lot of social problems among the youth.

The Brothers also sponsor the education of four of the children in Delany Academy(below) and three orphan Secondary School girls (left). Part of this money was raised by Bro. James O’Rourke through family and friends in Ireland. It costs about U.S.$155 and U.S.$ 250 to educate a primary and secondary school student per year.
